Bastien Arnaud is an outsider to Villesen and will likely offer a major shift in Belmish politics if he is elected to a seven year term as President<\/p><\/div>\n

Villesen – Belmont\u00e9, Gallia.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Nationalist challenger Bastien Arnaud is expected to narrowly defeat the incumbent president of Belmont\u00e9 in Western Gallia as polls open in the country’s national election.<\/p>\n

The former Asper\u00e9 (Governor) of Ever\u00e9, launched a long-shot bid to become the next president early last month as incumbent Debussy called the late end of year poll. Debussy has been president of the important Gallian nation for seven years, and was expected to win re-election. However dissatisfaction with his performance following a strong challenge from the nationalists have turned polls against the centre party leader. Senior sources say there is great anger at the campaign that Debussy has ran, signalling that senior leaders of the party are ‘furious’ with his decision to call the election before 2017.<\/p>\n

Debussy took the role from Sharazad M\u00e0rtin in a shock-election defeat in 2009, however now her nationalist party look the favourites to emulate a similar shock victory seven years on. Arnaud was only selected as the candidate around four weeks ago, but has proved a popular and determined campaigner that has gained much support in the populated north of the country – as well as seeing an increase of support in the Lier Forest, a large area of countryside in the south of the nation. Arnaud has criticised the president for failing to live up to his campaign promises from 2009. His campaign has featured rallying calls around the phrase ‘Plus d’Echec’ – meaning ‘more failure’ and claiming that Debussy is a ‘promise-breaker’ and lightweight. Arnaud has been mayor and then later leader of one of Belmont\u00e9’s largest regions for over nine years and his popularity has grown throughout the four week campaign. However, little is known of his closest allies who may become central figures in his administration and government.<\/p>\n

ITO allies across Gallia are expected to cautiously welcome Arnaud’s victory later today – however many close to the current head of the alliance Jensen Hendentenberg, say he is concerned that Arnaud wants to place a deadline on resolution talks in the neighboring Lierland. His policy is expected to state that any political resolution must be drafted and approved by April 1 – otherwise, the Belmont\u00e9 government should continue with military strikes.<\/p>\n

Debussy had placed the Lier crisis as a central issue in the campaign – with warnings an Arnaud victory would put the plan in ‘danger’. However, many living close to the border in the south of the country have been attracted to Arnaud’s ‘straight talking’ on the conflict, stating that the East Padanian government must now take further action for itself and secure all of the western borders of the disputed territories without ITO and Belmont\u00e9 support. Villesen is expected to declare the entire Lier\/Belmont\u00e9 border as a ‘safe zone’ should Arnaud win the election.<\/p>\n

Debussy’s defeat would also strengthen Erlangen-Ansbach’s calls for the crisis to focus solely on defeating the regime in Torrence. Arnaud is rumored to have already created a call list of world leaders that he will speak to upon assuming the presidency. His priority is expected to be ITO members, as well as the Yujin Emperor. He is also expected to speak with regional partners, including Lorraine and other neighbours, as well as the President of Polasciana. Arnaud is expected to call on the nation to apologize for negotiating with Kadikistan in 2009 and to ‘do more’ to tackle piracy and Solarian violence in the Long Sea. The eastern nation controls access to much of the Long Sea from the east, with its Schnet Coast island chain.<\/p>\n
